Becoming
a Freelance Photographer
Ideas for starting a home-based photography
business

Is photography a passion of yours? Do others compliment your
work? Have you ever thought about making money with your hobby? Many
photographers who start out taking pictures as a hobby decide to go into
business for themselves. This can be very rewarding and those who take photos on
their own time as part of their own business are known as freelance
photographers.
Some of the unique advantages of being a freelance
photographer are as follows:
- You are in business for yourself, you are in charge of
your own business and you run it the way you want to.
- You create your own schedule.
- You decide what assignments you want to accept or
decline.
- Every assignment you take is different.
For these reasons, freelance photography is an attraction to
many photographers, both new and experienced. Most photographers start out
taking pictures in their spare time. They may or may not do it for money, as
the main purpose is to gain experience. As they begin to establish a
reputation, they expand to take on more assignments and a larger workload.
Naturally, the money will follow. Freelance photography is similar to
freelance writing in that many people turn it into a career and enjoy the
freedom of working for themselves on their own time and making money doing
something they love doing anyway.
Building a Portfolio

The key step in submitting your work for pay is building a portfolio. This is
the most basic step in getting started. A portfolio shows samples of your
work. You don’t have to have published photos to begin your portfolio. Just
choose your best work and continue to add to it as you progress. It
sometimes helps to categorize your photos by subject or theme. Either way,
make sure you make you make it look as professional as possible.
Developing Your Skills
Most often, the quality of your photography will determine whether or not
you get paid for your photos. Some photographers have more natural talent
than others for taking great pictures but it is a skill that anyone can
learn. One idea that might help is to enroll in a class or seminar at the
local community center. These classes are usually offered at little or no
cost. For the more serious photographer, there are schools dedicated
to the art of photography and you can even get a degree in it. Some cities
have photography groups that meet to share photos and tips. There are also
many groups online dedicated to photography and freelance photography.
It
helps to study as many professional photographs as possible. See what’s getting
published and compare it to your own photos. Visit an art fair or a photography
show and see what stands out. Ask others for their opinion or ask to see their
work. This allows you to compare and learn from other photographers. It takes
more than just point and shoot to get a great photo. You need to learn about
lighting, focus, color saturation, backgrounds and much more.
Once you start learning the industry and building your portfolio, you can
start submitting your photos to contests and magazines. Get a list of
photography markets and start submitting to ones that accept your type of
photos. Don’t expect to make it to the big times right away. Few people
actually achieve this but you can start small and eventually make your way
into a nice living from freelance photography.
